OKO PROJECT: EMO MALL GOTH

Lacey: β€œI am going to send you something that would be specific to the Hot Topic account (which I think you'd be great for!!) HT always sends us very specific groups and they want their jewelry to be pretty literal. Of course we always take our spin on things but we really have to make components that relate back to their trends. In the attached you will see the group that they sent us and I'd love to see you come up with a 4 layer necklace with a card to match back and a trio earring with a card to match back. Let me know if you have any questions :) Thank you so much!”

Peach: β€œThanks for following up and being so detailed with your explanation. I will get started and revert back!”

1. REVIEWING REFERENCES

After closely reviewing the above trend direction, I took down notes of all relevant themes and narrowed them down to determine the key motifs and colors:Β

Key Motifs
  • Hearts/Broken HeartsΒ
  • Stars/Nautical StarsΒ
  • CheckerboardΒ
  • Spikes/Sharp Objects
  • Skulls + CrossbonesΒ
  • ChokersΒ
  • Emo + Goth Themes
  • Spirals
  • Verbiage (β€œWeirdo,” β€œEmo”)

Key Colors
  • Silver MetalΒ
  • Red and BlackΒ
  • Black and White

2. BRAINSTORMING + LINE PLANNING

At this point, I take the key motifs and colors, start looking for inspiration for charms, and lay out any and all ideas I have in a folder and on Photoshop before narrowing it down to the most relevant and my personal favorites.Β

I would also begin sending factories the above trend sheet and my ideas below, and begin sourcing for anymore charm possibilities.

One idea I wanted to execute was a checkerboard coffin, so I made it out of the below image.Β

3. LINE PLAN

Each charm was inspired by the trend sheet directly or a spin on the key motifs and colors. For necklace chains, I would want to know which cable and link chains were previously used in product bought by the Hot Topic so I can use them as reference for this set. Β

4. CARDING

For the 4-layer necklace and 3-pair earring carding, I came up with three themes inspired by the key motifs and colors using stock imagery and vector elements. I used the Hot Topic logo as a placeholder. (Finish: Spot gloss the black parts for a shiny vs matte contrast, maybe logo in silver?)

2. Purple Emo Grunge
3. Warped Checkerboard

5. SAMPLING + FINALIZING

At this point, I would submit and pitch the above carding ideas to the design director and if approved, create physical mockups to determine the right measurements and hole placements. I’d also test how the product looks on the mockup.

Next, I’d use Illustrator to make a tech pack detailing measurements, colors, materials, finishes and any other relevant information. After sending it to the factory, I stay in close contact to track ETA of the carding samples. Once arrived and approved for quality, the product and carding is ready for the showroom or customer! Β

I really hope you enjoyed my thought process behind the above project and that I met expectations of the brief.

This project took about 6-7 hrs, and the website another 2-3.

It has been great meeting, and learning about OK Originals Ltd.

Thank you so much for your consideration! :)
